A 17-year-old male accused of shooting at another male at a Tumwater bus stop Wednesday morning has been arrested for first-degree assault.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, which occurred in the 400 block of Cleveland Avenue Southeast at approximately 8:28 a.m. on Feb. 18.

Olympia High School was placed on lockout Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution” as officers and deputies searched for the suspect, according to the Tumwater Police Department.

Multiple witnesses called 911 to report that two males were fighting at a bus stop and that one of the males had fired a shot at the other then fled on foot towards the Safeway fuel station, according to Tumwater police.

Officers quickly arrived and located the victim, who was uninjured and able to provide a description of the suspect.

“The victim quickly advised he did not know the suspect,” the Tumwater Police Department stated in a news release. “He reported they were both at the bust stop when the suspect started displaying what he believed to be gang signs, and a verbal altercation ensued and the suspect pointed a gun at him.”

The suspect allegedly fired one round and then fled.

The Olympia Police Department and the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office were both notified of the suspect’s last known direction, and helped the Tumwater Police Department search the area.

With help from a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office K9 who was able to track the suspect’s path, a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputy ultimately located the suspect on Hawthorne Street Southeast near Olympia High School.

He was arrested without incident and has since been booked at Thurston County Youth Services, according to the Tumwater Police Department.

“We appreciate the assistance we received from our regional partners with this investigation, and the abundance of witnesses who have provided info regarding what they saw,” the Tumwater Police Department said in a news release.

The suspect’s name has not been released by law enforcement. Information on juvenile court cases is not available to the public.
