Capital can’t catch up to Peninsula in blowout loss

The Capital baseball team scrapped with the Puget Sound League Narrows Division-leading Peninsula for three innings, but the Seahawks pulled away to win 20-7 Tuesday.

Peninsula and Capital exchanged three runs in the first inning, with the Cougars bringing runners home on a sacrifice fly by Isaac Linville and an RBI double by Easton Bramble.

The Seahawks responded with two runs in the second inning and four in the third to pull ahead 9-3, but Capital chipped away with two runs in the third.

Peninsula’s hitting prowess eventually became too much for Capital, as the Seahawks tallied one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and seven in the seventh.

Despite the loss, Capital recorded 10 hits, including five for extra bases. Lane Nixon finished 3 for 5 with a double, and Easton Bramble went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a double. Defensively, however, the Cougars committed six errors.

“We had plenty of good at bats today, and we’ve been steadily improving offensively throughout the season. We need to take the same attacking mindset that we have on offense into the field defensively,” Capital head coach Brian Shannon said. “We place a big emphasis on playing good catch in our training, and that’s an area we have not been good enough in this season. We’re going to keep working to improve at it.”

Capital (6-9, 6-6 Puget Sound League) and Peninsula (12-2, 11-1 PSL) will square off again Wednesday in Gig Harbor.
