The Capital softball team couldn’t climb back after Bellarmine put up eight runs in the third inning in its season opener Monday at Stevens Field.

Bellarmine opened the third inning with six straight base hits against Capital starting pitcher Lexie Dura, including three doubles and a triple, to score five runs. The Lions finished the frame with nine hits to jump in front by eight.

The Cougars offense came alive in the fourth as Lola McKeone and Dura each reached base on singles before Taylor Lindsey brought them both home with a double to center field. Devyn Zipperer tallied one more run with an RBI double of her own, but the Cougars left two runners in scoring position to end the inning.

Bellarmine kept raking in the fourth, scoring five runs off six hits to take a 13-3 lead.

Dura pitched all four innings for Capital and allowed 16 hits, 13 earned runs and struck out two while walking one.

Capital (0-1, 0-1 Puget Sound League-Nisqually) is scheduled to host Silas Wednesday.
