In its first game since their monumental victory against rival Olympia last week, the Capital volleyball team couldn’t keep the momentum going, losing 3-2 at Bellarmine Thursday night.
The Lions took the first set 25-20 before Capital came alive to secure the next two 25-17, 25-23, to take a commanding 2-1 set lead. Bellarmine rallied with a 25-21 fourth-set win to send it to the fifth, and the Lions triumphed 15-10 to hand the Cougars their first loss.
Both of Capital’s matches have gone the distance.
“Only having one match this week toward the end of the week made for a different rhythm. But we were able to use the week to work on a lot of things and continue to get better,” Capital head coach Maia Nichols said. “I’m really proud of how hard the girls fought last night and how well they played together. One thing I love about this team is that even when we’re down, we don’t get chippy with each other. No one is blaming anyone for mistakes, because mistakes are part of the game and everyone is going to make them. We stay together, and that’s something that’s really important to us.”
Capital (1-1) has a tough slate ahead as it will host Central Kitsap Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Gig Harbor Thursday, Sept. 17.
