Capital outlasts Lakes in high-scoring affair on senior night

The Capital softball team picked up its third win of the season and secured a season sweep of Lakes by defeating the Lancers 16-11 Wednesday.

Capital took a 2-1 lead through two before Lakes jumped in front with one run in the third and four in the fourth. Trailing 6-2 to the winless Lancers, the Cougars rattled off nine runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Lola McKeone and three bases-loaded walks.

Lakes cut the margin to two with a three-run fifth inning. After Capital loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, Elizabeth Sloppy blasted a grand slam to center field for her first home run.

However, it was ruled a three-run triple and out at home, with the home run negated as “a player touched [Sloppy] before she touched home plate,” according to Capital head coach Jeremy Taylor-Sparks, who added that the coaches count the grand slam in their books. On the very next pitch, Lexie Dura hit a solo home run to put Capital ahead by six runs.

“It was a team effort for sure as all the girls came to play for their seniors on senior night,” Taylor-Sparks said. “Lola was a wall behind the plate, Davanee [Weide] didn’t miss a ball at first base, and our middles did their thing today. Elizabeth Sloppy followed her grand slam with recording all three outs herself at third base in the top of the next inning.”

Capital (3-13, 3-11 Puget Sound League) honored its three seniors on senior night: Lola McKeone, Devyn Zipperer and Elizabeth Sloppy. The Cougars will host Mount Tahoma (4-10, 4-10 PSL) Friday.
