Capital freshman midfielder Quin Walz delivered a pair of goals in a three-minute span, and the Capital boys soccer team defeated Lakes 5-1 at Swarthout Field Tuesday night.
The Cougars roared out of the gates with a fifth-minute goal from Quinton Fisher off an assist from Zade Watson, followed seven minutes later by a goal from Asher Fricke in the 12th minute, with Jack Thompson earning the assist.
Up 2-0 at halftime, Lakes responded with a score in the 52nd minute. But over the final 16 minutes, the Cougars netted a trifecta of goals, including two from Walz, which were both assisted by Jaden Annan. Aslan Gikaru put the game away with a goal in the 77th off a pass from Brody Womack.
“We had several chances in both halves. We jumped ahead early and got very comfortable, but we couldn’t quite put the game away with the third goal,” Capital head coach Jeremy Richtmyre said. “There was a bit of uncertainty after the Lakes goal, but the boys settled down and finished the game solid. I’m proud of the way they bounced back after a bit of adversity.”
Capital (11-1-2, 6-0-1 Puget Sound League) remains in first place in the Nisqually Division. The Cougars have scored five or more goals in four games this season.
“Today, the boys truly played for each other. They made fantastic anticipatory runs off the ball, trusted each other in and out of possession, and left it on the field,” Richtmyre said. “I’m hopeful we can continue to build on this and grow individually and as a team.”
The Cougars have three games left in the regular season, first at South Sound Stadium against River Ridge (0-12-1, 0-7-0 PSL) Thursday night. Capital will celebrate its seniors on Thursday, April 30 against Peninsula.
