It took some time for the Capital boys soccer team to find the back of the net, but the Cougars eventually broke through in the second half for a 2-0 victory against River Ridge Tuesday night. With the win, Capital has won six straight games, including five via shutout, and is one of two unbeaten teams in Puget Sound League play at 4-0.
Senior Quinton Fisher finally broke the scoring spell in the 57th minute, scoring off an assist from junior Joshua Nguyen. Junior Jaden Annan added to the Capital lead with a goal in the 76th minute, with an assist from junior Kellen Woods.
Capital did not allow a shot on goal by River Ridge. Through 11 games, the Cougars have allowed just seven goals this season.
“I was impressed with the number of chances the boys created. And even though we took a long time finding the back of the net, they stayed composed and executed the game plan,” Capital head coach Jeremy Richtmyre said. “We controlled the game from start to finish and just kept knocking until the breakthrough finally happened.”
Richtmyre added that he is continually learning new things about his group, especially in the past two games where shots didn’t find the mark. But, he said, the Cougars still found ways to get the job done.
“I’m optimistic that these moments are great learning opportunities, so long as we’re keen to acknowledge them for what they are,” Richtmyre said.
Despite the loss, River Ridge head coach Daniel Arevalo was impressed with his young group against the top team in the Puget Sound League.
“I loved the way our team competed. The boys showed a lot of heart and determination,” he said. “We were missing a few of our attacking players, so we knew it would be tough. But the boys that showed up gave 100%. Even though we lost, we proved to ourselves we are improving and that this is a new River Ridge.”
Capital (9-1-1, 4-0-0 Puget Sound League) gets the rest of the week off and will visit Peninsula (2-5, 1-2 Puget Sound League) Monday night.
River Ridge (0-8-1, 0-3-0 Puget Sound League) will take on North Thurston (4-2-4, 1-1-1 Puget Sound League) at South Sound Stadium Thursday night.
