Tied at three after the opening inning, the Black Hills High School softball team suffered multiple mishaps in the field and the 10 errors piled up to a 22-10 setback to Steilacoom on Thursday afternoon in Lacey.

In the season-opener, the Wolves (0-1) gave up three in the top half of the first and responded with three in the bottom half on an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball after loading the bases all on walks. They didn’t score again until the fifth.

Steilacoom pushed across six runs in the third frame, two more in the fourth, three in the fifth and blew the game open with an eight-run sixth. It finished the day with 17 hits to just two errors.

Black Hills’ Lily Shipe cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the fifth and crossed home on a passed ball two pitches later. The Wolves also tallied three runs in the sixth, but the mercy run rule came into effect.

Shipe and Makenna Oderman each registered an extra-base hit and four batters recorded multiple walks. Emma Arko went 2-for-2 on the day for Black Hills, who will take on reigning Class 2B state champ Adna on Monday afternoon.
