Cassidy Hedin and Ashlyn Hufana each had four victories for the Thunderbirds on Friday afternoon at their home meet, leading them to the team title with 147 points. Centralia was fifth with 43 while Black Hills (38) and W.F. West (36) both were in the top-10.
Hedin triumphed in the 300 hurdles in 45.60 seconds while Hufana secured first place in both the 100-meter dash and long jump. Hedin was on all three of Tumwater’s victorious relays while Hufana ran a leg on its 400 and 800 relays.
Alexandra Broome claimed the open 800 and anchored the 1,600-meter relay. The T-Birds also saw Wendy Ferrell (pole vault) and Abigail Krause (shot put) finish in first. Black Hills had the other area girls win from Hailey Tinsley, tossing the javelin 112-02 for the win.
Centralia’s Desiray Crockett took second in the 100 hurdles, Jayden Krogness placed third in the shot put and two of its relays also placed third. For W.F. West, junior Joy Cushman picked up a pair of top-four finishes in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs and also anchored the 1,600-meter relay to a top-five placement.
Rochester star Brooklyn Alfonso placed second in the javelin and the 400 relay placed fourth.
On the boys side, Tumwater’s Blake Kirkpatrick also pocketed four victories with wins in the 100 and 200-meter dashes plus he anchored the winning 400 and 1,600-meter relays. Jaxon Budd leaped 22-03.75 to win the long jump and took second behind Kirkpatrick in the 100.
Three T-Birds – Logan Budd (300 hurdles), Donny Bush Jr. (pole vault) and Jack Hahn (triple jump) all took second. Black Hills’ Jess Bender nabbed fourth in the long jump while Rochester’s Le’Shawn Hines placed top-nine in all three jumping events.
For the two Lewis County schools, Centralia’s Sam Volavola reset his school record in discus, launched a best throw of 179-10 to triumph in the event, and he also took third in the shot put. Zander Corwin (high jump) and Ethan Weiher (1,600) each took second.
W.F. West’s hurdle duo of Maddox Sampson (110s) and Hayden Niemi (300s) swept the events and Peyton Santiago placed second in the javelin.
Contreras leads Mossyrock girls to top-three team finish
While her post-high school athletic career will be on the volleyball court, Leah Contreras started the homestretch of the track and field season for the Vikings with a personal best in the 200-meter dash on Friday night.
Her victory, plus two others and a handful of top-five finishers, gave Mossyrock 66 points to place third at the Al McKee Invite in Stevenson. Contreras’ time in the open 200 was 27.90 seconds and she also anchored the 800 relay to a win in 1:56.58 plus placed third in the 100.
Audrey Ollikainen claimed the shot put with a heave of 29-11 and took fourth in the discus. Mossy’s 400 and 1,600-meter relays also recorded top-four placements.
On the boys side, the Vikings had a handful of runner-ups. Briar Baldwin was second in the 100 and 200 while Carson Dewallie took second in the high jump. Tristen Tosul finished second in the javelin and their 400 relay was the second-best team.
Their lone win came in the 1,600 relay in 3:43.45, anchored by Dewallie, who also took fourth in the high jump. Thrower Russell Eckloff tossed the shot 39-05.50 for a new career-best and fifth place performance.
North Thurston County dominance
Timberline senior Brady Moe broke a 14-year-old school record in the 800 meters, finishing third at 1:55.51 to shatter the previous mark by over two seconds. Olympia senior Caden Durocher won the event at 1:53.27, and Capital junior Jae Walz took second at 1:54.27. Olympia junior set a new PR at 2:03.11 for a fifth-place finish.
Olympia senior Carson Godfrey broke his own school record in the discus, tossing 176-10 to finish in second behind Volavola. Timberline's Joel Pedro finished fourth at 146-2, a new PR, and Olympia senior Kaleb Mulcare PRed at 140-11 to take fifth.
Olympia senior Sam Rigg set a new PR in the 400 meters, winning the event in a blazing 50.37 seconds. He also took second in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.22 seconds and fourth in javelin at 161-9.
Olympia junior Jack McDurmon won the 1,600 meters in 4:38.08, and freshman Quenton Lanese triumphed in the 3,200 meters at 9:22.11. North Thurston sophomore Sebastian Olson wasn't far from Lanese in the 3,200 meters, finishing in second with a new PR of 9:31.26, good for third all-time in program history.
Olympia junior Tucker Downing earned the javelin title, throwing 172-3, and Olympia Kam Kronmeyer took home the top prize in high jump at 6 feet even. Senior Logan Gerrits set another PR in pole vault, hitting 13-7 for the first time to win the event. Timberline senior Carmelo Roper won the triple jump at 44-05.25.
Timberline junior Hannah Jackson won the 200 meters with a PR of 25.79 seconds and took second in the 100 meters at 12.72 seconds. She now ranks in the top six in school history in both events. River Ridge senior Iliana Cross finished in second in the 200 meters at 25.80 seconds, a new PR.
Olympia sophomore Anneliese Jones earned a new lifetime best in the 400 meters, winning the first-place crown at 59.22 seconds. She has set PRs in back-to-back meets in the 400 meters. Senior Bennie Asomaning won the discus at 123-06, her season best.
The Olympia girls dominated the distance events, with freshman Leah Hennen breaking her previous best run in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:08.73 to win the event. In second place was fellow freshman Caitlin Lanese, who also set a PR at 5:15.49. Freshman Gemma Stevick (11:39.01) won the 3,200 meters, while freshman Eliza Johnson (second at 11:43.03) and senior Ava Barr (third at 11:43.22) also established new best times.
Timberline senior Paityn Gagnon won the triple jump with a new season-best at 35-01.5 and also took second in long jump at 16-11.5 and second in high jump at 5-2.
