IntercityTransit Walk N Roll program announces art contest for new sign design

Posted

Over the years, Intercity Transit’s Walk N Roll program has partnered with Target Zero Thurston Task Force, Child Care Action Council's Safe Kids Thurston County and the Olympia Police Department to design, print, and distribute yard signs with traffic safety messages.

Signs are displayed in neighborhoods and around schools in Thurston County where people are walking and rolling. The goal is to encourage drivers to slow down, making Thurston County a safer place for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Now, it’s time for new yard sign designs and Intercity Transit is asking for the community’s help. Transit is accepting designs from youth in kindergarten through 12th grade.

To participate in the contest, either email the digital design to walknroll@intercitytransit.com or mail it to Intercity Transit Walk N Roll 526 Pattison St. SE, Olympia, WA 98501 by Oct. 1. Include the artist’s name and school with each submission.

Designs must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • No more than four colors.
  • No copyrighted images (no logos, no cartoon, movie, or television characters, etc.).
  • 24 x 18 inches or a 4:3 ratio.
  • Designs should include a car as well as people walking and/or rolling.
  • All graphics of people rolling (biking, roller-skating, skateboarding, etc.) must wear a helmet with chin strap.
  • Text and graphics must be visible to drivers passing by.
  • Each sign needs to include one of the following slogans:
    • Drive Slowly for a Safer Oly
    • Safe Drivers = Good Neighbors
    • Save Lives, Not Seconds

Designs may be hand drawn on paper or created using digital tools.

Walk N Roll will select up to three yard sign designs to be printed and handed out to the community for free. Winners will be announced by Oct. 15.

In 2020, the original set of three yard signs were designed by Thurston County youth and paid for by State Farm. In 2024, three new designs were created by students at Avanti High School and paid for by Target Zero.

Residents can pick up a free yard sign at: Intercity Transit Customer Service, daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Olympia Transit Center, 205 Franklin St. NE, Olympia.
