Law enforcement in use PIT maneuver, pepper balls to stop fleeing suspect in Thurston County

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Lacey Police Department officers helped the Washington State Patrol catch a suspect fleeing a warrant arrest on Interstate 5 Wednesday night.

A trooper had attempted to take the suspect, whose name has not been released, into custody on I-5 when a fight ensued, according to Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders.

The suspect allegedly assaulted the trooper before fleeing in a vehicle.

The trooper pursued the suspect and conducted a PIT maneuver, shutting the freeway down.

Deputies, K9 Asher, and Sanders responded with Lacey officers to assist.

A passenger reportedly  exited the vehicle following the PIT maneuver, but the suspect refused commands and closed the car door behind them.

Lacey police deployed a drone and the suspect could be seen trying to start the car again without success, according to Sanders.

Law enforcement posted open the rear window with a less lethal 40mm launcher, and subsequently filled the vehicle with Pepperball — a frangible projectile containing a powered chemical similar to pepper spray.

“The suspect lasted about 15 seconds once the spice was introduced, at which point he surrendered and was taken into custody,” Sanders said in a social media post. A Husky inside the vehicle was “friendly and not harmed,” Sanders wrote.
