The momentum created from winning the EvCo sub-district titles for W.F. West’s Elizabeth Mittge and the T-Birds duo of Adela Schmiedeberg/Ashlyn Spencer was more than enough to put themselves in Seattle.
Mittge finished second in the Class 2A District 4 singles bracket, the same placement that Schmiedeberg/Spencer finished in the doubles bracket at Mint Valley in Longview. It’s the first career state appearance for Mittge in three attempts.
And for the Tumwater duet, it’s the first time since 2019 the program has sent a doubles team to the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus.
Mittge breezed into the championship match by beating a pair of Woodland players – Emily Townsend in the quarters and Tessa Townsend in the semis – in straight sets. The Bearcats senior lost nine games total in the two wins.
She ended up losing in the title match to Columbia River’s Jenny Serebriakova in straight sets.
It was a similar tournament for Schmiedeberg and Spencer, picking up two straight set victories to reach the finals. In the semis versus Ridgefield’s duo of Emeree Rodda and Zoe Stenback, the first set was back and forth until the South Thurston County pair triumphed 7-6 and coasted in the second set, dropping one game.
Schmiedeberg and Spencer lost in the championship match to Columbia River’s tandem of Annie Morgan and Sydney Walburn, but nearly extended the bout to a third set before losing 6-2, 7-5.
Day one of the state meet in Seattle is scheduled to begin Friday morning.
