Capital senior quarterback Nolan Potts had himself a night on Friday, Oct. 2 with 352 total yards and three total touchdowns against Peninsula, but the Seahawks pulled away in the fourth quarter from the Cougars to win 40-28.
The Cougars led 8-7 after the first quarter as Mason Bottin scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown. Potts’ first touchdown of the night was a 1-yard scamper into the end zone, yet Peninsula found the end zone twice to take a 20-14 halftime advantage.
Cale Burkheimer caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Potts in the third quarter, and Carter Armstrong hauled in a 47-yard score in the fourth. Peninsula maintained its lead throughout the second half and outscored the Cougars by the same score in the second half as it did in the first: 20-14.
“We made too many mistakes. Peninsula is a well-coached team and very disciplined. We can’t make mistakes against a team like that,” Capital head coach Terry Rose said. “You have to take every opportunity to be productive and stay on top of it, and we didn’t. They did. Our kids kept in the fight, but in the end, we just couldn’t catch back up.”
Potts completed 23 of his 32 pass attempts for 285 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and he rushed for 67 yards and a score. Julien Mikealson recorded 98 yards on three catches, and Armstrong collected 11 receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. Carter Pennington nabbed nine catches for 82 yards.
Capital (2-3, 1-1 Puget Sound League) will return home Friday, Oct. 9 to face Lakes (4-1, 2-0 PSL) at Ingersoll Stadium.
