The North Thurston boys soccer team only needed five shots on goal, and they netted three in a 3-2 come-from-behind, thrilling victory over Timberline Tuesday night.
Timberline and North Thurston exchanged goals in the first half, with the Blazers scoring in the 19th minute and the Rams’ Walther Elbert taking a pass from Rayan Moustafa to tie the game in the 30th.
Timberline regained the lead in the 58th minute with a goal, and with the contest in stoppage time and the clock stopped at 2 minutes, North Thurston cleared a corner kick to Leonardo Cortez, who drilled a volley from about 20 yards out to tie the game.
Moments later, Tate Vetas came up with the game-winning goal as Dail Ortiz forced a turnover close to Timberline’s goal and passed it to Vetas.
“It was a crazy and hard-fought battle by both teams,” North Thurston coach Tristan Glazer said. “Credit to Timberline. They were quality and outworked us for large portions of the game. We didn’t play our best game, and I could tell our players were frustrated for much of the match. The credit goes to our guys for sticking with it to the end. Scraping away a win there is huge for us knowing that we can win despite not being at our best.”
North Thurston (7-2-5, 4-1-2 Puget Sound League) now sits in second place in the PSL, with Timberline (6-5-2, 4-2-1 PSL) behind the Rams. North Thurston will visit Peninsula (4-7-0, 3-4-0 PSL) Thursday night, while Timberline travels to Lakes (4-8-0, 2-5-0 PSL).
