The Olympia softball team celebrated its three four-year varsity seniors with a 12-2 verdict over Bethel in five innings on senior night Thursday at Stevens Field.
Sydnee Chandler-Trent, Mariah Martin and Georgia Maurer were honored during senior night festivities. Chandler-Trent was one of the stars of the day, finishing 3 for 3 at the plate out of the leadoff spot with two runs batted in and three stolen bases. She also struck out four batters over 4.2 innings in the circle.
“Sydnee has led us in the circle as a senior with the most innings pitched this year,” Olympia head coach Drew Wellner said. “Tonight’s game was a true game to highlight the future at Olympia. We played all seniors and some of the younger girls today, and they really came together and sent the seniors out with a win.”
Olympia blitzed Bethel with six runs in the first inning due to the Bison struggling in the circle, compiling three walks and three hit batters to score the first three runs. Olivia Wheeler cleared the bases with a three-run single to cap off the explosive frame.
Wheeler added to her stellar day out of the ninth spot in the lineup with an RBI double in the fourth. She drove in four runs on a 3-for-3 day and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.
Seniors Maurer and Martin started as center field and shortstop, respectively, against the Bison.
“The three seniors have been a big part of the team. All have been on varsity all four years and have taken on starter roles as seniors,” Wellner said. “Mariah was our starter at second base and was a great leader by example and hard worker. Georgia was the vocal leader in the group, always staying positive. She was our starting centerfielder and has played great this year. She has taken away quite a few home runs from opposing teams.”
Olympia (7-12, 7-8 South Puget Sound League) will close out the regular season on the road against Sumner (11-6, 9-6 SPSL) Friday.
