Olympia senior thrower Carson Godfrey broke his own school record in shot put Thursday afternoon when he threw 61 feet and 2 inches to win the event in a meet at Yelm High School.

Godfrey’s previous outdoor best was set during his state championship performance in Yakima last May, when he threw 60-10.5. He is the only Olympia boys athlete to exceed 60 feet, and he has done it in five meets.

Godfrey also won the discus handedly, throwing 165-8 — 51 feet and 6 inches further than the second-place finisher.

Olympia freshman Rowan Powers tied the school freshman high jump record for boys at 6 feet to win the event against four of his teammates. Sophomore Austin Hanson won the 400 meters with a new personal best of 57.20 seconds, while freshman Quenton Lanese blazed through the 800-meter race at 2:00.90.

Junior Taylor Fabritius earned a first-place victory and a new PR in triple jump with a leap of 41-5.

Olympia sophomore Alana Hobbs also neared the girls high jump record, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches, just a half inch shy of tying the mark set in 2005 by Sara Klein.

Sophomore Makenzie Bendiksen continued her strong start to the season, finishing in first in the 100-meter dash at 13.30 seconds and beating teammate Mika Meconi by just .02 ticks.

The Olympia boys won 12 of 17 events against Yelm, while the girls clinched victories in 11 of 17 events.

Yelm sophomore Alejandro Silva earned his first event victory of his career, winning the 1,600 meters in 4:55.18 to set a new PR. Senior Patrick Walsh took first in the 3,200 meters with a new lifetime best of 9:28.89, followed closely in second by teammate Marcos Andujar at 9:32.99.

Yelm senior Samuel Dejiacomo placed behind Godfrey in shot put and discus. He threw for a new PR in shot put at 48-11.5 while spinning the discus for 114-2.

Junior Alissa Alvarado-Young’s 200-meter run of 28.58 seconds was good for a new PR and her first first-place finish. She also improved on her best time in the 300-meter hurdles and won that event, as well.

Senior Madelyn Lawson set personal bests in shot put (35-1), discus (99-5) and javelin (88-6), finishing first in shot put and second in both discus and javelin. Lawson now ranks tied for seventh in Yelm history in girls shot put. Senior Isabelle Arena took the javelin crown with a season-high throw of 98-11.5.

Olympia’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday in the Bear Relays at Ingersoll Stadium in Olympia, while Yelm will participate in the Curtis Viking Relays at Viking Stadium in University Place.
