Gabriela Paniagua’s header in the 87th minute served as the equalizer in a 1-1 draw for The Evergreen State College women’s soccer team against Simpson University Sunday morning.
Olivia DeVore assisted Paniagua’s goal, a 6-yard header that found the lower left corner of the net.
Simpson broke the scoreless drought in the 72nd minute off a Maylania Mikaele goal. The Redhawks outshot the Geoducks 16-9.
Evergreen junior goalkeeper Melina Grijalva played the first half and earned seven saves without surrendering a goal. For her efforts, she was chosen as the Cascade Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Goalkeeper Katie Gresham collected four saves in the second half.
Evergreen (0-1-1) will open the CCC slate on Friday, Sept. 18 at home against Oregon Tech.
