Rochester’s upset bid falls short to Elma

Up 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third, the Warriors path to an upset was covered up in a hurry by a 10-spot put up by the Eagles, eventually leading them to a 13-9 thrilling win at home on Monday.

It’s the most runs Rochester (1-13, 0-7 Evergreen) has scored in a loss this spring. Despite finishing with 14 hits, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. The Warriors did score three in the sixth, but went down in order in the seventh.

Elma’s first five batters in the third inning reached to tie the game at 5-5. After a strikeout, its next four batters recorded singles – three of them for runs – to take the lead for good. In the top half of the frame, Rochester’s Josie Nygard launched a two-run home run to take a three-run lead.

Nygard and Addi Morgan each registered three hits while Rylie Wild had two hits and two RBIs. Rochester will battle Rainier on Tuesday, beginning a stretch of five non-league games to close out the regular season.
