Saint Martin’s men’s soccer shut out by Chico State in California

Two second-half goals in a five-minute span doomed the Saint Martin’s men’s soccer team in a 2-0 loss to Chico State Saturday afternoon in Chico, California.

The Saints held the Wildcats without a goal through 58 minutes, and in the 59th minute, Cooper Gyll opened up the scoring with a goal off assists from Manoa Joao Monteiro and Simon Vaca-Lorenzi. Less than five minutes later, Lantz Gutierrez scored from a corner kick on the right side of the pitch to put the Wildcats up 2-0.

Chico State outshot Saint Martin’s 13-9, including 7-1 in shots on goal. Soren Hanson was responsible for Saint Martin’s lone shot on goal, while Xander Koenig and Jonathan Wright each attempted two shots apiece, along with Hanson. Senior goalkeeper Connor Leistiko recorded five saves in the net for the Saints. 

Saint Martin’s (2-2) will host Chaminade Thursday, Sept. 10 at noon.
