Two days after sweeping Montana State Billings for its first GNAC win of the season, the Saint Martin’s volleyball team was swept by Seattle Pacific on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Saints trailed for most of the first set until an Olivia Bassett kill put them up 17-16 as part of a 6-1 run. But a 19-16 lead didn’t last as the Falcons finished the set with a 9-3 spurt to win 25-22.
Set two saw both teams see-sawing back and forth before Seattle Pacific pulled away with a 6-0 run and secured a 25-14 victory.
The Saints bolted to an 11-7 advantage in set three, as Sophie Fast, Bassett and Naomi Rainwater were involved in an efficient offensive flow. Ahead 15-13, Saint Martin’s surrendered the next seven points as SPU jumped up 20-15. A late 6-1 run by Saint Martin’s pushed SPU to the brink, as the Falcons led 24-23 before Amaya Evans’ kill clinched the sweep.
Emily Garten and Bassett each totaled nine kills, while Fast dished 19 assists and tallied seven digs. Ashli Lum posted 12 digs.
Next up for Saint Martin’s (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) is its home opener Friday, Sept. 25 against Northwest Nazarene. However, due to the ongoing construction of Marcus Pavilion’s court, the match has been moved to The Evergreen State College.
