The Saint Martin’s volleyball team’s home opener was not played where the team imagined it would when the season started last month.
Due to the ongoing construction of the new court at Marcus Pavilion, the Saints played at the Costantino Recreation Center on the campus of The Evergreen State College Friday night against Northwest Nazarene.
Saint Martin’s was swept by the Nighthawks 25-22, 25-22, 25-12. In both the first and second sets, Northwest Nazarene pulled ahead early before Saint Martin’s made a run. However, in both sets, the Nighthawks got the last laugh, and they rode an immediate 10-1 run to open the third set en route to a 13-point verdict.
Saint Martin’s was led by Emily Garten’s 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks, while Sophie Fast recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs.
The Saints (5-7, 1-3 GNAC) will return to Evergreen Sunday to host Central Washington.
