Saint Martin's women's basketball's comeback against Northwest Nazarene falls short

The Saint Martin’s women’s basketball team rallied late in the third quarter to pull within one point, but couldn’t overcome Northwest Nazarene in Great Northern Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 24, falling 83-73.

The loss dropped the Saints to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in GNAC play.

Northwest Nazarene held an 11-10 lead after Saint Martin’s opened the game with a 6-0 run. In the second quarter, the Nighthawks shot 55.6% from the field to take a 39-31 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, it appeared Northwest Nazarene was pulling away, taking a 48-35 lead over the Saints with 3:47 left in the stanza.

Saint Martin’s, however, went on a 12-2 run and pulled to within 50-47. Harper Wagner hit a layup in the fourth quarter to draw within 50-49, but Northwest Nazarene took a 56-49 lead with 7:40 left in the game. The Saints pulled to within three points, but the Nighthawks went on another 6-0 run to go up 62-53 with 4:52 left in the game.




The Nighthawks held off any late comebacks from the Saints, cementing the win. Northwest Nazarene improved to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Jada Travis led the Saints with 20 points, shooting 5 of 12 from the field, also collecting five steals and three steals. Wagner added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Saint Martin’s returns to Marcus Pavilion in Lacey on Jan. 29 and will host Western Washington at 5:15 p.m.
