Six-run first inning dooms Olympia in season-ending loss to Tahoma in district opener

The Olympia softball team couldn’t recover from a tough first inning against Tahoma and ultimately fell 16-2 in five innings in the District 3/4 4A Tournament first round Friday in Kent.

Olympia trailed 6-0 after the first frame, as Tahoma’s Mia Hammington led off with a solo home run to center field, and a couple of errors by Olympia helped Tahoma plate its second run. By the time Olympia recorded its second out of the frame, Tahoma already had four runs on the scoreboard, and a two-run single by Adynn Ragoff made it 6-0. Tahoma doubled its lead over the next two innings, while Olympia produced one run in the fourth off an error and one in the fifth on a Sam Graham RBI double. Kalea Yelle provided Tahoma’s second home run of the game with a two-run shot in the third, while all four of its fourth-inning runs came with two outs.

Abby Crawford and Graham each recorded two hits for Olympia, and Ashlynn Carey, Sydney Potvin and Mariah Martin each logged one hit.

“Girls just got outmatched today,” Olympia head coach Drew Wellner said.

Olympia (8-14), the No. 15 seed in the district tournament, was scheduled to face No. 7 Stadium (14-7) Friday afternoon in an elimination game, but due to poor weather conditions to start the weekend, the tournament was turned into a single-elimination format. Therefore, Olympia’s loss to Tahoma in the first round ended its season prematurely.

Three seniors are graduating and moving on from the program: Sydnee Chandler-Trent, Georgia Maurer and Mariah Martin.

In 2027, the Bears will return three First Team All-South Puget Sound League South starters in Crawford, Potvin and Aliyah Eberle, as well as contributors such as Graham, Tyler Trujillo, Katelyn Pearson and Izzy Falling.
