The Tenino boys basketball team fell behind early to Hoquiam Tuesday night, and the Beavers offense never created a spark to dig out of a hole in a 53-34 loss.
Hoquiam led 18-5 after the first quarter, with Tenino shooting just 2 of 12 in the opening frame from the field and the Grizzlies operating at nearly a 50% clip on offense. The Beavers connected on some more shot attempts in the second quarter, including a 3-pointer by Kellan Johnson. But by the time Tenino entered the locker room at halftime, the Grizzlies’ lead had swelled to 32-16.
Tenino struggled again to shoot in the third, knocking down just 1 of 11 field goal attempts. Overall, the Beavers shot 23.8% from the field. Jeremiah McKague led the Beavers with nine points, Tucker Matheson tallied seven, and Johnson scored five. Radly Whitaker and Henry Czuleger added four apiece.
Tenino (2-13, 0-3 Evergreen) will look to snap a five-game skid when it faces rival Rochester on Thursday at Rochester High School. The Beavers have won four straight meetings with the Warriors.
