The Tenino girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start on Tuesday against Naselle, falling 68-32 in its home opener.

Tenino struggled offensively out of the gate, scoring just four points in the first quarter, while Naselle scored 21 in the first and 20 in the second to build a 28-point lead at half.

“They have a good press,” Tenino coach Kirsi Gofinch said. “They were draining every shot they took.”

Tenino (0-2) had more success in the second half on the offensive end. Kylie Gonia finished the game with 18 points to lead the Beavers.

“She does such a good job attacking,” Gofinch said. “She’s a very smart and savvy player.”

Charley Jones added seven and Georgia Gore added four.

The Beavers will be at home again on Thursday to face Fort Vancouver, where they’ll hope to get their first win of the season.

“I have a really great group of girls to work with,” Gofinch said. “We’d rather have some challenging games to get ready for league. We’re gonna keep getting better. We set the tone, and they still fight and work to get better.”
