Tenino closes ‘long week’ with victory over Rochester

After losing to Rainier in a competitive sweep and dropping a five-set thriller to Toutle Lake, the Beavers notched a victory to begin Class 1A Evergreen League play over Rochester 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20 on Thursday night.

Tenino head coach Shauna Carpenter referred to it as a “long week” and felt her girls played tired. Yet Katen Burkhardt’s 23 kills and nine digs fueled the Beavers to come away with a Scatter Creek Showdown win.

“Katen took control of the floor putting balls away to carry us through,” Carpenter said. “Rochester played the best we have seen them play.”

Kendall Bowe added 11 kills and Sequoia Zimmer finished with 30 assists, 14 digs and missed only one serve for the Beavers (3-4, 1-0 Evergreen). Peyton Songer chipped in 15 digs in the back row plus Keira Laughlin also hit double digits with 12 digs.

Rochester (2-7, 0-2) took a set for the first time in over two weeks and will look to take that momentum into Monday’s tilt with Rainier. Meanwhile Tenino will wait until Tuesday to play next when it takes on Hoquiam.
