One day after earning a win via the games tiebreaker, the Tenino girls tennis team ended up on the wrong end of the same tiebreaker in a loss to Columbia (White Salmon).
The Beavers won all three of the singles matches against the Bruins, but lost all three of the doubles matches and lost the games tiebreaker 58-52.
Chloe Suess, Kyla Watson, and Eva Wegleben each picked up singles wins in straight sets, and Watson was able to battle through a tiebreak in the second set to come out on top.
“They showed some mental fortitude,” Tenino coach Sam Shea said. “Especially when we were getting into those closer scores … Tiebreaks are always moments where we can let ourselves lose and get in our own way. Kyla stayed focused and wrapped that up, that was a good moment for sure.”
All three doubles teams lost in straight sets, though Gracie Sweet and Izzy Schnase did force a tiebreak that went 16 points in the first set of their match.
“Our doubles teams, they have all the things we need,” Shea said. “We have to learn to let go of the small points and stay focused on the big picture. We have a lot of tennis in front of us, and sometimes we lose sight of that and get in our own way.”
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, a few Beavers will now turn their attention to the district tournament.
The singles and doubles tournaments will have 12 participants each, with the top seed from each school getting a berth along with a few wild cards that will be selected by the district’s coaches in a meeting on Friday.
The two finalists in both tournaments will advance to the state tournament.
The 1A District 4 Tournament is set to begin on Monday at W.F. West High School.
