Tenino’s first game against Elma on Tuesday played out how many of Tenino’s recent games have, as the Eagles pulled away for a dominant 12-0 victory.
Game 2 of the league doubleheader was a much different story, however, as the Beavers scored five runs in the fifth to take a lead, and they held on for a 4-2 victory.
The win snaps a 13-game losing streak, one that dated back to March 23. Tenino’s only win prior to Tuesday came on March 21, when the Beavers topped Kalama in their season opener.
“The kids showed a lot of resiliency,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said. “It’s been a tough go, and to take the beatings we’ve had and to be able to clear it and keep pushing is a sign of how tough they are.”
Elma got on the board with two runs in the second inning, but after that, Easton Miller settled in nicely. He ended up pitching into the fifth, allowing just four hits and the two runs.
Mason Metcalf pitched the final two and two-thirds, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
“Easton threw a hell of a game,” Schlesser said. “He kept us in it the whole time and just attacked the strike zone. The defense played well behind him. And for Mason to come in and shut it down was really good to see.”
The four-run fifth was all the run support Miller and Metcalf needed.
Miller helped himself by drawing a bases-loaded walk to put the Beavers on the board, and Sawyer Noonan put Tenino ahead with a two-run single. Jensen Werner added an RBI single of his own to tack on an insurance run.
“We were finally able to put some pressure on them offensively and force some mistakes,” Schlesser said. “That was nice there.”
Tenino (2-13, 1-7 1A Evergreen) and Elma will face off again in Elma on Thursday.
