Tenino splits doubleheader against Hoquiam

A late error cost Tenino in a 6-3 Game 1 loss against Hoquiam on Tuesday, but the Beavers bounced back to salvage a split with a 6-1 victory over the Grizzlies in the nightcap.

Kellan Johnson got the Beavers on the board in the third with an RBI single, and Jensen Werner and Lucien McKendall added on later in the inning with an RBI groundout and an RBI single to make it 3-0.

That score held into seventh, where Sawyer Noonan took the bump in hopes of finishing off a complete-game shutout. He quickly got the first two outs of the inning, and after a single, drew a ground ball to short that could have ended the game.

Instead, it went in the books as an error, and the floodgates opened from there.

The next six Grizzlies that came to the plate reached base, and six runs scored in the process to shift a three-run Tenino lead into a deficit entering the bottom of the final frame.

During that stretch was another error that could have ended the inning with the score tied at three.

Three runs were charged to Noonan, while the other three were charged to Mason Metcalf, but all six runs were unearned.

The Beavers quickly bounced back at the start of Game 2, however, scoring three times in the first and once more in the second to take a 4-0 lead.

Hoquiam got on the board with a run in the third, but that was the only run that Easton Miller allowed in his complete-game effort. He allowed seven hits without issuing a walk, and he struck out six.

At the dish, the Beavers added on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

Noonan finished with three hits and drove in three runs, while Brayden Bennett added two hits and an RBI of his own. Johnson added a hit and an RBI and scored twice.

Tenino (3-15, 2-9 1A Evergreen) will head to Hoquiam for the series finale on Friday. The winner will clinch the No. 4 spot in the Evergreen League and will punch its ticket to the district pigtail game on May 8.
