Tobin leads Bearcats past Wolves in pitchers’ duel

W.F. West’s Taylor Tobin and Black Hills’ Hannah O’Shurak shined in the circle at Recreation Park on Wednesday, where the Bearcats inched past the Wolves in a 1-0 victory.

Tobin was not only dominant, but also efficient, throwing the complete-game shutout on just 71 pitches. She allowed just four hits, didn’t walk a single batter, and struck out seven.

W.F. West coach Kevin Zylstra said that the goal was for Tobin to be efficient, as the Bearcats have two more games this week and another on Monday.

“We had her on kind of economy mode,” Zylstra said. “She was just on today. She did a great job putting the ball where we wanted it. I was just really pleased with the way she threw today … That was a great way to start the week off for us.”

O’Shurak was just as dominant, allowing just four hits and walking one while striking out five across six innings, but W.F. West was able to manufacture a run in the fifth.

Kenley Fragner drew a walk, and after she stole second, freshman Kinley Tuerschmann came in as a courtesy runner. Tobin singled to move her up to third, and Avery Osborn hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Tuerschmann home.

W.F. West (5-0) has now won five games in a row to open the season, and it will look to make it six in a row on Thursday at Prairie. On Friday, the Bearcats will head to Shelton, and on Monday, they’ll head to Aberdeen.

“It’ll be a good test for us,” Zylstra said.
