Washington state Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti is requesting concepts from the public for Washington’s submission to the United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program, a news release from the treasurer’s office announced.
The program, first launched by the U.S. Mint in 2019, honors innovation and innovators from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories by issuing four new $1 coins every year through 2032.
Washington state is set for a 2029 issuance. Washingtonians are encouraged to visit tre.wa.gov/WaInnovationCoin to share their ideas for consideration.
Pellicciotti was designated by Gov. Bob Ferguson to serve as the official liaison to the U.S. Mint and will assemble an advisory committee to review public submissions, collaborate on concepts, and formalize a submission to the Mint.
“Washington’s story is suffused with innovation in the arts and sciences which span eras of American history. As leaders of culture and industry I am confident that our state will have a broad range of options to represent our state’s tradition of invention and revolution,” Pellicciotti said in the release. “I look forward to hearing from Washingtonians across our state to inform this process.”
The governor must submit concepts for the Washington state innovation coin to the Mint by mid-October. The next phase will include design development, consultation with the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, and public review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
“Washington is one of the most innovative states in the nation,” Ferguson said in the release. “The Innovation Coin program is a unique opportunity to honor our history and share our story. Share your ideas today.”
The final design selection will be made by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury for the 2029 issuance.
