Behind five players in double figures and a couple others stuffing the stat sheet, the Tumwater Thunderbirds secured a season-opening victory over the Steilacoom Sentinels on Thursday night in South Thurston County.
After a delayed start due to football playing in another state championship, the guys that went from the gridiron to the hardwood had little rust. Landon Anchors posted 12 points, six dimes and four rebounds, while Ethan Bello added eight points and four steals.
Tumwater (1-0) opened the game in a hurry with a 15-2 cushion and never left off the gas. It proceeded to outscore Steilacoom by at least five points in every quarter. Junior guard Owen Reamer led the way with 14 points and Luke Overbay — a Michigan baseball commit — chipped in 13 points.
Overbay also grabbed nine rebounds, a team-best, plus Braeden Konrad contributed 12 points, seven boards and five steals. The T-Birds will continue their non-league slate at home on Saturday versus Capital.
