Through five games this season, the W.F. West girls soccer team didn’t allow a goal. It was a streak the Bearcats were hoping to extend when they headed north to face River Ridge at South Sound Stadium on Thursday night.
Instead, W.F. West found itself down 1-0 less than a minute in.
It didn’t take long for the Bearcats to equalize, though, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
River Ridge’s Kinsley Phillips found the back of the net off a throw-in that could’ve gone to either team from about 35 yards out for the Hawks’ only goal, but Ashlen Gruginski scored off an assist from Mirabel Burger just 10 minutes later.
“It was a really good team play,” W.F. West coach Kevin Schultz said. “I’m really proud of the response that they showed.”
Towards the end of the first half, Schultz said that some fatigue was starting to show, as the Bearcats also played on Wednesday, but they were able to recuperate a bit at halftime.
In the second half, both teams generated chances, but neither could score the elusive second goal.
The draw snaps W.F. West’s (5-0-1) five-game winning streak, but it does push their unbeaten streak to six.
The Bearcats will hope to make it seven on Saturday afternoon, when they host Selah.
