In only nine innings of action so far this spring, the River Ridge softball team is off to a roaring start with 42 total runs in two blowout wins, the latest coming against Lincoln by a score of 21-2 Wednesday at the Regional Athletic Complex.
The Hawks have scored 21 runs in back-to-back games. In the first inning against Lincoln, River Ridge crossed home plate 13 times after the Abes scored the first two in the top half.
On the first pitch of the game, Jacklyn Holcomb squared up a bunt to the third baseman, who sailed the throw over the head of the first baseman in a play that ended up as an inside-the-park home run. On the next pitch, Jaylah Sok-Vandergriff socked a triple to left center field and then tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch.
After a walk by Raylie Birklid, Eva Lynch cranked the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a two-run homer. Kaylani Karageorge put the ball in play and ended up scoring on the same play due to more defensive mishaps by Lincoln.
Before the Abes could get the first out of the game, they had given up seven runs as Rylee Standard drove in two on a single. In her second plate appearance of the first inning, Sok-Vandergriff tripled to score Standard.
In total, the Hawks amassed 11 hits, three walks and reached on two errors in the first inning alone.
Standard and Holcomb each added another RBI in the second, and a ground ball by Sok-Vandergriff scored two on an error.
Holcomb finished the day 4 of 5 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs, while Haleigh Camberg and Standard each batted 3 of 4 with four RBIs. Birklid shined out of the bullpen, striking out seven in three shutout innings of work.
