A driver of a car that rolled over on Interstate 5 early Sunday morning pulled a gun on a passerby who stopped to help, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. just south of the King County line, in Pierce County, and no other cars were involved, spokesperson Kameron Watts said. A man was driving south on I-5 and the car rolled over into a ditch before he was ejected. He was lying on the ground, injured. A passerby, also a man, pulled over to help.
The driver of the rolled car “pulled a firearm on the person who checked on him because he demanded a ride, and that person denied to give them a ride away from the scene,” Watts said.
The driver then fled on foot. The passerby was uninjured and reported the incident to 911, Watts said in an email.
Investigators located the driver later in the morning when a friend of the driver called the State Patrol, saying the man was in the woods and couldn’t walk due to injury.
“The suspect is now being treated at a local hospital, and no firearms in connection with the incident have been located yet,” Watts said.
Watts said “too much time” had passed to tell whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
