Pippin Crump’s 2 goals fuel Capital to shutout of Tumwater

Capital girls soccer head coach Adriana Montes deployed a 4-4-2 formation after the Cougars’ Sept. 8 loss to Olympia, and her team has been unstoppable ever since.

The Cougars are now on a three-game winning streak, including a 3-0 home shutout over Tumwater Thursday night.

They broke a scoreless first half with a goal by Pippin Crump, who rebounded an indirect free kick and scored off an assist from Ella Reeves. Capital added a second goal off the foot of Sophia Phillips in a kick that turned into an own goal by Tumwater, and Crump and Reeves connected once again before the final whistle, securing a brace for Crump.

“There’s been a lot of growth and progress for this team. Our captains have taken a lead in making sure that we’re locked in,” Montes said. “We wanted to control the game. We really found connections, switched the point of attack and found each other in the final third. Ella really facilitated the central area of the field.”

Eliza Gantenbein and Luna Manzanares each collected three saves in the net, with Gantenbein starting and playing the first half while Manzanares took over in the second half.

Capital (3-2) will open the Puget Sound League schedule at Lincoln on Tuesday, Sept. 22, while Tumwater (1-5-1) looks to snap a three-game skid Thursday, Sept. 24 at home against Aberdeen in its EvCo opener.
