Potts takeover leads Capital to comeback win over Silas to clinch Round of 32 bid

The Capital football team rallied back from a 20-7 halftime deficit against Silas thanks to 42 unanswered points in a 49-26 win on Friday, Oct. 30.

With the win, the Cougars punched their ticket to the 3A Round of 32 next week.

Senior quarterback Nolan Potts put the team on his back with six total touchdowns, including four rushing touchdowns in the third quarter alone.

It wasn’t just the amount of third-quarter touchdown runs that’s eye-popping. Potts scored on runs of 21, 18, 44 and 91 yards. The 44-yarder was easily the craziest, as he made multiple tacklers miss in the backfield, burst up the left sideline and juked one final defender to coast into the end zone.

“We made adjustments and flipped the switch. Nolan Potts came out on a mission, and our defense made sure to keep up,” Capital head coach Terry Rose said.

Silas opened up a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, and Potts connected with Carter Armstrong for a 21-yard strike early in the second quarter. Just before halftime, the Rams added to their lead with a third touchdown pass, but the extra point was blocked.

In a seven-minute span in the third quarter, Potts scored his four rushing touchdowns, and a 20-7 Silas lead turned into a 35-20 Capital advantage heading to the fourth. Potts threw his second touchdown pass of the night to start the fourth quarter, finding Cale Burkheimer for a 17-yard score.

Garrett Murphy brought the scoring run up to 42 straight with a 3-yard plunge in the fourth, and as the heavy fog rolled in, Silas scored a touchdown as the buzzer went off.

“We talked a lot about what our story will be and how we are going to write it tonight. We played with incredible resiliency and played as a team,” Rose said. “I could not be more proud of our coaches and our players for just believing in the system. Our story is not done. Not by a long shot after tonight.”

Capital (5-4, 4-2 Puget Sound League) will learn of its next opponent on Sunday, Nov. 1. Rose said he is “fairly confident” that the Cougars will be on the road.

More stats will be added to this story once they are made available.
