Cathlamet proved to be a tough place to play on Wednesday, when the Rainier baseball team dropped a non-league matchup against Wahkiakum 6-4.

The Mules jumped on top with three runs in the first, but the Mountaineers responded with four runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead.

That lead held until the bottom of the fourth, when Wahkiakum plated another three runs to retake the lead for good.

Jackson Stockdale pitched the first five and two-thirds, allowing six hits and all six runs, but three of those runs were unearned. He walked three and struck out seven before Kaymen Larman came in and got the final out of the sixth.

Offensively, Wyatt Cughan hit a double and drove in a pair of runs, and Kaden Goodman added a hit and two RBIs of his own. Wyatt McIntyre added two hits, and he also drew a walk in his other plate appearance.

Rainier (8-9, 8-8 C2BL) is locking into the No. 5 seed for the upcoming district tournament, which will pin them against the Pacific’s No. 4 seed (Forks as of April 29) in the first round of the tournament on Saturday, May 9.

Before then, the Mountaineers will finish the regular season with three more non-league games, starting with a home matchup against Raymond/South Bend on Monday.
