Toledo wallops Rainier with first 60-burger of season

Spurred by another efficient passing night from sophomore Joaquin Acosta, the Riverhawks put up a new season-high in points with a 61-16 verdict over Rainier to remain perfect in the C2BL East standings.

Acosta was 10-of-14 for 201 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball to several different targets. Jaxyn Pelagio scored twice in the second period while Rhyder Buswell and Casen Gale also caught TD passes.

“He hit a couple deep ones and that’s where he’s been struggling. That was not the case tonight,” Toledo head coach Mike Christensen said. “He was on the money, played really well and made good decisions with the ball.”

The Riverhawks (6-1, 2-0 C2BL East) scored 16 points apiece in the first three frames. Nico Acosta tallied 184 yards on 20 carries and two TDs while Austin Reed and Blake Kurtz both had over 50 rushing yards.

Joaquin Acosta also had the lone fumble recovery, helping Toledo win its sixth straight and make it five consecutive games of its opponent not scoring in the 20s.

Up next for the Riverhawks is a matchup with Onalaska for potentially the C2BL East crown. It’ll be year three where the two sides will determine who wins the league and both sides have triumphed once.

“The fact it is for a league title and we know what is at stake makes it more important,” Christensen said.

Meanwhile Rainier (3-4, 1-2) will now have to beat Toutle Lake on Saturday to keep its hopes at a crossover alive. Zander Bartell scored both of the Mountaineers touchdowns, a 2-yard run and a 20-yard reception.
