The W.F. West girls soccer team had their chances against Tumwater on Thursday, but the Bearcats were never able to break through, and the two sides played to a 0-0 draw under the lights at Tumwater District Stadium.
The first 20 minutes of the game were back and forth as the two sides traded early attacking chances, but after W.F. West made an adjustment in the midfield, the field started to slant the Bearcats way.
That continued throughout the rest of the first half and into the second, but still, they weren’t able to capitalize.
By the end of the night, W.F. West had tried 18 shots while giving up just four and won 14 corners, but they hit the post or crossbar four different times and never found the back of the net.
“It’s just one of those weird games,” W.F. West coach Kevin Schultz said. “In soccer, sometimes you can control things and create chances, and the ball doesn't go in the net.
“The thing that kind of worries us is that this is three straight road games where we haven't been able to finish our opportunities,” Schultz continued, noting 1-0 wins in Shelton and Aberdeen the previous two Thursdays. “That’s definitely something we need to get better at.”
Schultz also commended Charlee Nelson, who saved all four shots she faced and earned her 22nd shutout in net for the Bearcats, setting a new school record.
W.F. West (10-0-4, 5-0-2 2A EvCo) will host Shelton on Tuesday.
