The Evergreen State College volleyball team put up a fight against the top team in the NAIA in Eastern Oregon but was swept 25-16, 25-23, 25-14, in La Grande, Oregon, on Saturday, Oct. 10.
EOU led wire to wire in the first set, but Evergreen’s Bright Brubaker held her own early with a pair of kills and a pair of assisted blocks. Sophia Scroggins also pounded three kills in the first set.
Evergreen held a 15-11 lead in set two thanks to consecutive service aces by Paron Holmes and back-to-back aces from Annalise Orlowski. The Geoducks led for most of the set against the undefeated Mountaineers, nearly handing them just their fourth set loss in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
But after leading 23-22, the Geoducks’ errors helped EOU take the lead and clinch a come-from-behind victory in set two.
Zosia Formella caught fire in the final stanza with five kills, but the Mountaineers led from start to finish and closed out the third set with five straight points.
Formella finished with a season-high 11 kills on just 18 attack attempts without an error. Scroggins added eight kills and seven digs, and Jayden Vaimaona led the Geoducks with 15 assists.
Evergreen was also swept by The College of Idaho (25-11, 25-12, 25-12) in Caldwell, Idaho, on Friday, Oct. 9. The Geoducks (2-14, 1-11 CCC) will return home on Friday, Oct. 16 to face Walla Walla.
